the car in my profile is for sale. $39,995
This car was built at the Linden, NJ production plant and sold new in Morristown, NJ. It spent much of its life in Pennsylvania and most recently was in New York. We have three build sheets for this car to support that it is a true Cutlass SX.
The Cutlass SX Convertible for 1970 is fairly rare. In fact, only 793 Convertible were built in 1970 and 357 were built in 1971 before the model was discontinued. If you know your Oldsmobiles, you know that the SX was kind of the 442 in sheep’s clothing. Typically, the SX cars are equipped with more options. In the end, it was one way to get the big 455 Rocket V8 and not get assessed high insurance fees.
This car has its number-matching powertrain. The L33 455 came equipped with a 2 barrel carburetor. It would have been 320 horsepower and rated at 500 foot lbs. of torque. The turbo 400 hydramatic transmission was especially built and still has its OD tag. The rear axle contains the standard ratio 2:56 to 1 gearing with Anti-Spin positraction. The differential is covered by an Aluminum W27 cover.
At some time, the original intake manifold and 2 barrel carburetor were replaced with an Edelbrock Aluminum intake and four barrel carburetor. I would suspect this provide an increase in both horsepower and torque.
This car is very nicely equipped. It has Air Conditioning that was converted to R134a Freon, Soft Ray Tinted Glass, Tilt steering column and inside hood lock. There are quite a few power options including Power brakes, with the front being disc, and power steering. In addition, there is a power trunk release, power notchback bench seat, power convertible top and power windows and locks. This car also has its original AM/FM radio and 8 track player. It has the Rally Gauge Package, Safety Sentinel and Map Lights. The interior is adorned with wood-grain trim.
This car has always been Burnished Gold. It was repainted long ago and still looks great. The original convertible top was Gold. It was replaced with a Black convertible top with glass rear window. The interior is Saddle in color. I believe the front seat was recovered. The back seat appears to be original, as do the carpet and door panels. They all look nice.
This car has dual Sport Mirrors, with the Driver’s side having remote control. All Cutlass SX cars had the 442 rear bumper with the cut-outs for the Trumpet exhaust tips. This car has Super Stock Stock II wheels painted in body color with trim rings. The tires are BF Goodrich Radial TA in size 225/70/14.
We have receipts in a folder detailing quite a bit of the maintenance and repairs. Currently, the odometer reads just over 80,600 miles and that is said to be Actual. The engine was completely rebuilt at 72k miles. At that time, the transmission and rear end were serviced and inspected. A new exhaust system was also installed. I believe that is also when the tires were installed.
More recently, the brake system was refurbished including the master cylinder, pad, rotors and wheel bearings. The radiator was recored at 67k miles. There are quite a few lesser repairs detailed in the folder. The car is ready to be enjoyed.
The underside of the car is perfectly solid. The frame is not rusty. I see that new fuel lines have been installed. The transmission pan was replaced with a chrome version.
The body is straight. The paint shined up nicely. Considering that the car was painted about 35 years ago, it looks great. There are only a few small areas that have been touched up. The bumpers are in good condition.
The Air Conditioning will need a charge. There is still pressure in the system, so it should not need repairs. All other features work properly, with exception of the power seat. The motors turns, but the seat doesn’t move. Otherwise, I believe everything works as it should.
A new carpet in the box and a new set of matching floor mats go with the car. I didn’t think they were needed yet.
If you are in the know about Oldsmobiles, you know the significance and rarity of an SX Convertible. At any rate, they are great cars to drive, with tons of torque and exceptional highway cruisers. This particular car is very well equipped with many desirable options.
The documentation is all present. The powertrain is numbers matching. This is a rare car and a good car.
