17 is the official trim code for Pearl / Ivory in 1971. However, Fisher Body's cowl tags always used a 3 digit trim code number starting with a 9 from 70-72, so what you're seeing is correct.

Hi Everyone,
I have a 71 SX convertible and have a questions about the trim code on the cowl tag. On the cars documentation it show a trim code of 17 (the car does have a white interior in it), but on the cowl tag on the firewall the trim code is 987. Does anyone knwo why this is? What is 987?
