General Cutlass SX455 Q&A

1970 OD Code Transmission Rebuild
Author Last Post

Thank you, Alan!

1. False

2. True. The turbo 400 uses a switch instead of a cable.

3. True. The back drive linkage must be present for the floor shifter to move the column to lock the key in Park.

Team,

I am scheduled to start rebuilding my transmission in a few weeks and would like some input into the characteristics and features on the 1970 SX OD code long tail transmission. I've read a few pieces of information about the SX trans setup, but I am not sure if they are fact or fiction.

1) OD code TH400's have a firm shift from the factory without the need to add a shift kit. True or false?

2) SX Cutlasses did not have a kick-down cable: True or false?

3) While not directly transmission related I've read that the SX models with floor shift still have a shift bracket on the steering column. True or false?

Any other details that can be provided to to help with a fairly authentic rebuild would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
