General Cutlass SX455 Q&A

Engine numbers
Author Last Post

No, it could not be possible. The engine is stamped for the car it was ordered for to coincide with the transmission number and VIN of the ordered car. Although the engine may appear similar, there are internal differences between the years such as cam, pistons, crankshafts etc...

As stated, I knew it was not the original engine. I just wondered if it was the correct engine. If a 70 car is built September 69 could it have a date code 69 engine? Or did they stamp the engine when it was mated with the car?

Hi James, thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately, that is not the correct engine for your car. That engine was originally installed in a full size 1969 car, most likely a Delta 98. The correct engine for your car will have last 6 digits of your VIN# as part of the that number you listed.

I have a 70 SX (Lansing built) delivered to the dealer in September 69. It does not have the original engine. The engine block number is 39M385939. Is this the correct engine for the car?
