General Cutlass SX455 Q&A

Paint code
Author Last Post

That is not red primer on the build sheet, it is just staining. Your build sheet is the proof that your car is a real SX as it shows the Y79 option right on it. It also tells me a few other things about you car like that it is an original L33 2bbl car equipped with FE2 Suspension and a dual gate shifter and console.

Is that the red primer you were talking about all over the build sheet?

I also found the build sheet above the gas tank

Picture of body Id tag

If your car is a G, then that means it was built in Framingham MA. All the cars from Framingham had a red oxide primer that is found everywhere on the body. It almost looks like the rally red paint. I have a 71 442 Framingham car with all the original primer still on it. Pictures of numbers and tags can help in identifying what your car is.

My car is in primer and is more of a parts car. Inside of door jams and trunk paint does look nice. I have know way of proving it is a real sx but a lot adds up that I think it is a real sx. It does have 73 on the tag and G is the assembly plant. I will try to post a picture of the tag

Thanks for the information.

Rallye red is a beautiful color would like to see pics of your car

Mine is a rally red car this what my trim tag looks like Alan helped me decode my car

Thanks Alan

On very rare occasions I have seen the actual code listed on the cowl tag for any of the special order colors. It happens so infrequently I have never looked into which plant the car came from to see if that is the cause of it. The majority of all cars with the special paint codes are usually always listed with a dash (-). A double dash (--) would indicate the top and bottom are the same color, ie; no vinyl or convertible top. A Rally Red car with a white top would be most commonly represented by (- A).

On a 70 it should be “73” it was a special order for only the 70. Don,t believe it was offered on the 71. If you go to the section on this website titled codes,it list all the paint codes for each year.

Is the rallye red paint code always a - - on the trim tag.
