General Cutlass SX455 Q&A

1970 TH400 Leaking Yoke
Author Last Post
Hello everyone,

My name is Brian Hornberger and this is my first post to the SX forum. I recently purchased the attached 1970 and I am working through the assorted mechanical issues to make this a reliable driver. Since the VIN's for the motor and trans do not match I have the vehicle registered as a clone.

I had thought the rear main seal on the TH400 "OD" tag transmission was bad until I cleaned the area yesterday and found that the leak is actually coming from the center of the yoke. I thought, "How is this possible?", until I did some research and read that certain yokes were built with a pressure release feature and contain an o-ring seal. Questions:

1) Is this a typical feature on the SX cars? 2) Does anyone have experience repairing this problem?, and 3) How do you disassemble this style of U joint?(I am only familiar with the exterior snap ring style).

Thank you in advance everyone! Brian Hornberger
